The physics of mouth leak
A nasal CPAP pressurizes the air going into your nose. As long as the lips stay closed, that pressure splints your airway open all night. The moment your lips fall open, the air rushes out the mouth — the path of least resistance. Pressure drops. The airway collapses again. The machine ramps up to compensate. You wake up tired and parched.
What sealing the lips does
Mouth tape closes the leak path. Pressure stays where the doctor prescribed it. Airway stays open. The humidified air your machine produces actually reaches your lungs instead of evaporating across your tongue. Most users see leak rates drop from 30–60 L/min to under 10 on night one, with measurable AHI improvement in the next week's SD-card report.

FAQs
What's a normal CPAP leak rate?+
Most machines flag anything over 24 L/min (ResMed) as excessive. Mouth leak alone can push you well past 40 L/min. Sealing the lips typically brings the number back under 10.
Will mouth tape help my AHI?+
If your residual AHI is high because of mouth leak (pressure escaping, airway collapsing), yes — many users see AHI drop by half or more in the first week. If your AHI is high for other reasons, tape won't change it.
What about a chin strap instead?+
Chin straps hold the jaw closed but don't always seal the lips — air can still leak between the lips. Mouth tape seals the actual leak path. Many users use both for the first few weeks while building the habit.
Can I tape with a full-face mask?+
No — full-face masks already cover the mouth and need to be able to vent during exhalation. Tape is only for nasal pillow and nasal cradle masks.
